Male, Maldives – Don’t Forget to Visit This Exciting Capital

Male is the capital city of the Maldives, but unfortunately most visitors to these beautiful islands simply treat it as a transit point, passing through on the way to their resort.

Male is an island itself, and though small enough to walk around in slightly more than an hour, it is packed full of interesting sights to see and things to do.

If you are planning a Maldives vacation be sure to ask whether your resort organises day trip excursions to Male. Here are some of the things you will be able to see during a visit to the capital city.

  • Hukuru Miskiiy is an ancient mosque which dates back to the 1650s; it is one of the grandest structures in the city and is definitely worth a visit.
  • The National Museum displays artifacts once owned by the country’s Sultans, items range from clothing to weapons.
  • The Muleeaage was initially built as a palace but has been used as the presidential residence over the years.
  • If you love to shop then head to Chandanee Magu and Orchid Magu where you will find clusters of interesting souvenir shops and cafes where you can sit and watch the world go by.
  • Sport lovers should head to the National Stadium to watch a soccer or cricket game being played.
  • If you start to get hungry on your day trip Male has many tea shops offering light snacks (hedhikaa) and non-alcoholic drinks.
  • You might prefer to spend a couple of days exploring the capital city of the Maldives. There are many hotels and guest houses to choose from and you should be able to find something in your price range. You can enjoy an evening meal at one of the many restaurants serving cuisines from Thai and Indian to American and Italian.
